"Every program they run turns to crap". Really, Greg? How about the GI Bill, Social Security, WIC, Medicare to name but a few. Do you see anybody with a brain wanting to get rid of those?I used to be from Connecticut....thank God I don't have to stomach listening to Fence Sitter Joey anymore.

I was interrupted by out of town guests before being able to comment on your question to me.."What is my solution to the out of control gun use in our country?" I am taking the time to answer because you asked for my solution and didn't just go into a rant which usually happens when someone dares to bring up sensible gun control. My solution is certainly not to "do nothing" which is happening now. I think our lawmakers who were elected by us and have a responsibility to protect us from serious harm should think with their heads and not with their political aspirations. To do this they will need some balls and will have to stand up to the lobbyists and NRA supporters who threaten to have them voted out of office! First, they could enforce the laws already on the books, which is not being done now. They could reinstitute the ban on assault weapons, and make all states comply with background checks and waiting periods to own guns. This would eliminate criminals and people who wish to obtain weapons illegally simply going to a state that does not have these sensible regulations in place. Eliminate local gun shows where weapons can be purchased or exchanged illegally with no ability to trace. Stronger penalties (automatic jail time) for owning or carrying a weapon illegally, and automatic life in prison if used in the course of a crime. These laws are in place in some states but not all. These are the easy measures that could be instituted and enforced and would be a start in a long chain of events that will need to take place before the average citizen can feel safe in his own community again. If we start today, it would take more than a 100 years to turn this around and get illegal guns off the streets and even then it would not completely stop people from these kind of killings; however, doing nothing as is happening now and allowing this crisis to escalate as it is doing is a recipe for doom. Owning a gun for sport or protection if you think you need it should not be against the law....but sensible measures must prevail in order for us to coexist in this current society. The no holes barred approach that we have to gun control now is akin to removing all traffic laws and assuming that drivers will respect their fellow man on the highways. When you allow dangerous weapons in the hands of humans there must be sensible laws in place to govern safe and effective use.

It went to 8 years when President Eisenhower signed the Universal Military Training Act in 1956. At that time the Reserve force went on Active Duty for 6 months of Training and then to an assigned National Guard or Army Reserve Unit for 7 years 6 months at the term ends they received a Discgharge unless they re-enlisted to extend their sedrvice to make the Reserves a Career. The Berlin Crisis created a Situation where 100s of thousands were called to active duty with their full units, followed soon there after by the Cuban Crisis ( we had a hot & cold running War)... Then JFK got us involved in SEA Treaty Organization and in Vietnam. The RFA System went away but the 8 years remained.
The Iranians do NOT hate us, they hate our support of Isreal. In WWII, Russia occupied the Iranian Oil feilds. We made the Russian leave. We protected them from the Russians. Later, we supported the Sha, and then the Iraqis. But still, last I hear, they don't hate us "per se". Only hate our support of Isreal. There was something in the News about their PM saying something to this effect, when told that Biden would seek to speak with them.
